Before Antietam

He had studied at Ohio Wesleyan University 1857-59 and graduated from Northwestern Christian (now Butler) College in Indianapolis in 1860. He was then a law student living with his father and siblings in his hometown of Byrd in Brown County, OH.

On 18 August 1861, by then 22 years old, he mustered as Private, Company F, 3rd Indiana Cavalry. He was promoted to Corporal, date not given.

On the Campaign

He was on the Campaign with his Company and on 13 September 1862 he was part of a 4-Company detachment from the 3rd Indiana and 8th Illinois regiments who engaged in a sharp little action with Cobb's Legion Cavalry at the Quebec School House near Middletown, MD.

The rest of the War

He mustered out at the end of his term of service on 14 August 1864.

After the War

He was County Attorney for Henry County, MO and Circuit Attorney there from 1868 to 1871. He was afterward a lawyer in Indianapolis, IN and served as a Special Examiner in the US Pension Office there. He published a history of the 3rd Indiana Cavalry in 1906.

He married Mary Helen Maklem (1842-1879) in November 1865 and they had 6 children; 5 daughters and a son.
