Before Antietam
Age 21, from Washington, ME, he enlisted on 20 September 1861 and mustered as a Private in Company B, 1st Maine Cavalry on 19 October.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action near Frederick, MD, probably about 12 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was exchanged and returned to his Company on 24 December 1862. He was promoted to Corporal in 1864 and Sergeant in 1865, and mustered out in 1865.
