Before Antietam
Age 22, from Abbott, he mustered as a Farrier in Company M, 1st Maine Cavalry on 31 October 1861.
On the Campaign
He was captured in action near Frederick, MD, probably about 12 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was exchanged and returned to duty by the end of 1862, but was discharged for disability at Frederick on 11 November 1863. He enlisted again, in Company C in 1864, was captured in action at Trevilian Station, VA in June 1864, and while a prisoner, was transferred as Farrier to Company F, First District of Columbia Cavalry on 8 February 1864. He died in the prison hospital at Danville, NC on 3 March 1865.
