He enlisted as Private, Company F, 3rd Alabama Infantry on 6 May 1861 in Montgomery. He was wounded at Mechnicsville, VA on 26 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 and was captured at Sharpsburg on 17 September.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, near Richmond, VA in 1864 and captured at Petersburg, VA in 1865.
