Before Sharpsburg
He had been a Corporal in the pre-war Talladega Artillery and he enlisted with them for Confederate service as 3rd Sergeant of Company B, 5th Alabama Infantry on 1 May 1861 in Talladega, AL.
On the Campaign
He was in command of the Company in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862 as senior man present, and he was wounded at Sharpsburg on 17 September.
The rest of the War
He was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant "by order of General Hill" on 26 September 1862. He was detailed on recruiting duty in February 1863 and was promoted to Captain after Captain Renfro was killed at Chancellorsville in May. He was retired on 26 May 1864.

He married Eliza Page (c.1843-) in Virginia in February 1863 and they had 5 children between 1868 and 1880. He married again, Annie Blair Elston (1845-1913).
