In 1860 he was 20 years old, living with the Muse family in Uniontown, Perry County, AL, and was probably a mechanic. Giving his age as 25, he enlisted as a Private in Company I (later D), 5th Alabama Infantry on 16 May 1861 in Uniontown (or on 6 May in Selma).

On the Campaign

He was killed in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
