He enlisted as Private, Company C (later H), 5th Alabama Infantry on 20 April 1861 in Pickensville and was commissioned Captain on 27 April 1862.

On the Campaign

He commanded his Company in action near Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and was held in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, DC. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital at the end of the war.
