From Prince William County, he enlisted in the Quantico Guards, later Company G, then B, 49th Virginia Infantry, on 1 July 1861.

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

He died of wounds in a hospital in Richmond, VA on 18 November 1862.
