From Fiery Run, Fauquier County, he enlisted as Private, Company A (later E), 49th Virginia Infantry, on 10 July 1861 at Culpeper Court House.

He was mortally wounded in the leg in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He died of wounds in Rappahannock County, VA on 10 November 1862.
