Age 24, he enlisted in Mount Morris on 11 May 1861 and mustered as Sergeant, Company H, 27th New York Infantry on 21 May. He was appointed First Sergeant on 1 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Crampton's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.
