Before Sharpsburg
Age 24, from New Hanover County, he enrolled there and was commissioned on 16 May 1861 as 2nd Lieutenant of Company G, 3rd North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 21 February 1862.
On the Campaign
He was mortally wounded by gunshots to the chest and head in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and died later the same day.
