Age 23, from Greene County, he enlisted there on 23 April 1861 as Private, Company A, 3rd North Carolina Infantry. He was promoted to Sergeant in July 1862.

He was mortally wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He died of wounds at home in Greene County on 8 December 1862.
