Age 20, from Craven County, he enlisted there on 22 July 1861 as Private, Company I, 3rd North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He returned to duty on 20 January 1863 but was mortally wounded at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 and died in a hospital in Richmond, VA on 28 May.
