Before Sharpsburg
In 1860 he was a 17 year old living with his parents and 8 siblings on their farm near Wilkesborough in Wilkes County, NC. He enlisted there on 15 February 1862 and mustered as a Private in Company B, First North Carolina Infantry.
On the Campaign
He was left behind, ill, in Frederick, MD and captured there on 12 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was in US Army General Hospital #1 in Frederick then sent to Fort McHenry in Baltimore about 19 September. By October he was at Fort Delaware and was sent to Aikens' Landing, VA on 2 October for exchange. He was in a Richmond, VA hospital by 9 October, officially exchanged on 10 November, and back with his company in December 1862. He was absent, sick after 5 May 1863 and considered absent without leave on 10 August. There is no later military record.
