A 19 year old farmer on his father's place at Wilkesborough, Wilkes County, he enlisted there and mustered as Private, Company B, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 February 1862.

On the Campaign

He was captured at Frederick, MD on 12 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was held at Fort Delaware, sent to Aiken's Landing, VA for exchange on 2 October, and was formally exchanged on 10 November 1862. He was listed as absent, sick, in August 1863 and considered absent without leave afterward.
