He enlisted as Private, Company G, 8th Alabama Infantry on 25 May 1861 in Mobile. He was promoted to First Sergeant on 15 July 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862:

The flag bearer, Sergeant Castello, whose gallantry had been conspicuous throughout the day, received a musket ball through the head.
