Before Sharpsburg

He enlisted in Greenville as Private, Company F, 8th Alabama Infantry on 20 May 1861. He was promoted to Sergeant on 30 June 1862.

On the Campaign

He was with his Company in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862 and was later cited for bravery there on a regimental Roll of Honor.

The rest of the War

He was elected 2nd Lieutenant to date from 17 (or 27) September 1862. He was wounded and left behind at Gettysburg, PA on 2 July 1863 and captured on the 4th. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 8 August 1863. He was in the US Army hospital in Chester, PA and sent to the Federal prison on Johnson's Island near Sandusky, OH on 31 August 1863. He was paroled and transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 14 March 1865 for exchange.

His service from his Compiled Service Record (CSR) at the US National Archives via fold3 and Colonel Herbert's History,1 which says he was promoted to Captain in November 1864.
