Before Sharpsburg

In 1850 he was Sheriff of Warren County and was appointed Postmaster at Gibson in newly organized Glascock County in 1858, was elected to represent them in the State House later that year, and was farming there by 1860. He enrolled and was commissioned First Lieutenant, Company B, 22nd Georgia Infantry on 3 September 1861.

On the Campaign

He was severely wounded in the hip in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Captain on 14 November 1863 and was killed at Deep Bottom Run, VA on 16 August 1864.

Calvin was one of 4 brothers in the 22nd Georgia, two of whom survived the war.

He married Hephezibah "Essibah" Price Vining (1830-1915) in May 1848 and they had 6 children.
