Age 26, he enlisted in New York City as a Private in Company A, First US Sharpshooters on 19 August 1861. He was appointed Corporal by November 1861 but was reduced again to Private at his own request on 1 March 1862.

On the Campaign

He was killed in a skirmish at Boteler's Ford on the Potomac near Shepherdstown, VA on 19 September 1862.
