Before Antietam
In 1860 he was a 23 year old living with his parents and siblings on their farm at Williamston in Ingham County, MI. He enlisted for 3 months' service as Private, Company A, 16th Ohio Infantry on 10 May 1861 and was discharged on 18 August in Cleveland, OH. He enlisted again, in Dansville, Ingham County, MI as a Private in Company I, First United States Sharpshooters on 20 December 1861. He was promoted to First Sergeant in 1862.
On the Campaign
He was killed in a skirmish at Boteler's Ford on the Potomac River near Shepherdstown, VA on 19 September 1862; he was hit by a gunshot while he was wading the river.
