Age 18, he enlisted as Private, Company D, 13th South Carolina Infantry on 23 August 1861 at Newberry Court House.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was absent, wounded, into June 1863, by then at home. By August he was in a hospital in Columbia, SC. By the end of 1863 he was detailed on conscript duty in Newberry then was on recruiting duty there to at least October 1864.
