Before Sharpsburg
From Newberry, he enlisted as 4th Corporal, Company D, 13th South Carolina Infantry on 18 April 1862 at Camp Gladden and was promoted to 5th Sergeant, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to 4th Sergeant by June 1863 and elected Junior 2nd (3rd) Lieutenant on 19 July. He was sick in a hospital in Richmond, VA in November and December 1863 and in July 1864, and in Columbia, SC in September 1864, but was surrendered at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
