He enlisted as Private, Company A, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 18 November 1861 in Columbia.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
Except for occasional details, he was present with his Company until declared a deserter in November 1864. He was arrested and returned on 24 December and listed as "absent in arrest" until he was captured near Petersburg, VA on 25 March 1865. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until released on 28 June 1862.
