He enlisted as Private, Company A, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 18 November 1861 in Columbia.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862 and at Sharpsburg on 17 September.
The rest of the War
He was sick in a hospital in Richmond, VA in August 1864 but otherwise with his Company through the war. He was captured at Five Forks, VA on 1 April 1865 and held at Point Lookout, MD until released on 22 June 1865.
