From Chester Court House, he enlisted as Private, Company A, 17th South Carolina Infantry, on 1 January 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was listed as absent without leave in December 1863 but was back on duty in January 1864. He was captured on 30 July 1864 at Petersburg, VA and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD to 8 August, then transferred to Elmira, NY. He was released on 21 June 1865.
