He enlisted as Private, Company H (later C), 17th South Carolina Infantry on 3 January 1862 at Camp Hampton near Columbia, SC.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was court martialed on 24 October 1862, outcome not given. He was captured at Kinston, NC, in November 1862 (date not given), and paroled on 17 December. He was listed as deserting near Kinston, NC on 13 February (or January) 1863 and he returned to duty on 13 September 1863. He was captured in action at the Crater near Petersburg, VA on 30 July 1864, briefly held at Point Lookout, MD, then transferred to Elmira, NY on 8 August. He died of pneumonia there on 9 January 1865.
