He enlisted as Private, Company D, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 14 January 1862 at Camp Hampton near Columbia, SC.

He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital #3 in Richmond, VA on 1 November and died there of dysentery (or pneumonia) on 27 November 1862. He was 19 years old.
