Before Sharpsburg
From North Carolina, he enlisted as Private, Company E, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 21 November 1861 in Columbia, SC. He was appointed brevet 2nd Lieutenant on 28 April (or 1 May) 1862.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was on furlough in December 1862. He was wounded on 30 July 1864 at the Crater near Petersburg, VA and absent recovering in hospitals and on furlough until listed as absent without leave on 14 November 1864. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 21 January 1865 and was present, in the Brigade infirmary, in February 1865. He was wounded by a gunshot to both thighs near Petersburg, VA about 13 March 1865, admitted to a Richmond, VA hospital on 26 March and transferred to Columbia, SC on 29 March.
