He enlisted as Private, Company E, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 6 May 1862 at Camp Pillow.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Except for a furlough in November and December 1862, he was present with his Company until he was killed "in entrenchments near Petersburg, Va" on 17 July 1864.
