He enlisted as Private, Company F, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 27 November 1861 in Columbia, SC.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Except for furlough home in February 1864 "arresting a deserter", he was present with his Company through the war until he was captured at Petersburg, VA on 25 March 1865. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until released on 15 May 1865.
