Before Sharpsburg
He enlisted as Corporal, Company H, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 9 December 1861 at Camp Hampton near Columbia, SC. He was promoted to 3rd Sergeant, date not given.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was First Sergeant by January 1863 and was with his Company to the surrender at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
