Before Sharpsburg

A farmer in the Barnwell District, he enlisted as Private, Company G, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 2 January 1862 at Camp Lee.

On the Campaign

He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

Except for periods in April and August 1864 when he was absent without leave, he was present with his Company until he was captured at Petersburg, VA on 25 March 1865. He was held at Point Lookout, MD until released on 24 June 1865.

After the War

By 1880 he was a farmer in Midway Township, Barnwell County, SC.

He married Mary Ann Elizabeth Varn (1837-1869) about 1854 and they had 6 children. He married again, Emily Elizabeth McMillan (1830-1900) in 1870.
