He enlisted as Private, Company H, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 9 December 1861 at Camp Hampton near Columbia, SC.

On the Campaign

He was slightly wounded in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain, MD on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was with his Company until he was mortally wounded about 2 July 1864, place not given. He was admitted to a hospital in Richmond, VA on 3 July and died there on 5 July.
