He enlisted as Private, Company K, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 9 December 1861 at Camp Hampton near Columbia, SC.

On the Campaign

He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was with his Company through the war until captured at Five Forks, VA on 1 April 1865. He was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD and released after taking an oath of allegiance on 28 June 1865.
