Before Sharpsburg
From the Fairfield District, he enlisted as Private, Company G (later B), 17th South Carolina Infantry on 24 December 1861 at Camp Lee in Charleston, SC.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Turner's Gap on South Mountain on 14 September and at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to 3rd Corporal by February 1863, to 2nd Corporal by October, and First Corporal on 1 September 1864. He was captured at Petersburg, VA on 25 March 1865 and a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until released on 26 June 1865.
