Before Sharpsburg
Then living in Shelbyville, NC, he enlisted as Private, Company F, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 27 November 1861 in Columbia, SC.
On the Campaign
He was in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was promoted to 4th Corporal by December 1862, 2nd Corporal by October, and First Corporal by February 1864. He was 5th Sergeant when he was captured in the Crater at Petersburg, VA on 30 July 1864. He was briefly at Point Lookout, MD but transferred to Elmira, NY on 8 August. He was released on 12 June 1865 after taking an oath of allegiance.
After the War
By 1899 he was receiving a pension in Cherokee, SC.
