He enlisted as Private, Company F, 17th South Carolina Infantry on 27 November 1861 in Columbia, SC.

On the Campaign

He was in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was admitted to General Hospital #21 in Richmond, VA on 19 October 1862 as a "convalescent" and sent on to Camp Winder on 16 November and transferred again, to the "smallpox hospital" on 6 December. He was admitted to General Hospital #8 in Richmond on 8 December with "variola - a mild form of smallpox - and transferred to Howard's Grove Hospital in Richmond on 15 December. He died there on 6 February 1863 at age 29. His hospital record noted he'd been vaccinated for smallpox 2 weeks earlier and it "took."
