Before Sharpsburg

Age 19, he enlisted as Private, Company B of the First South Carolina "Orr's" Rifles on 20 July 1861 at Camp Pickens in the Anderson District, SC. He was appointed First (Orderly) Sergeant on 13 August 1861.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was elected 2nd Lieutenant on 23 September 1862 and was acting Adjutant of the regiment in October 1862. He was promoted to First Lieutenant on 2 August 1864. He was surrendered with his Company at Appomattox Court House, VA on 9 April 1865.
