Giving his age as 20, from Johnston County, he enlisted as Private, Company C, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Wake County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and a prisoner at Elmira, NY until sent to James River, VA, probably for exchange, on 14 March 1865. He was furloughed home on March 28 and captured and paroled at Raleigh, NC on 2 May 1865.
