Age 26, from Johnston County, he enlisted as Private, Company C, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Wake County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the hip in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and a prisoner at Elmira, NY. He took an oath of allegiance on 30 June 1865 and was released.
