Age 27, from Wake County, he enlisted as Private, Company I, First North Carolina Infantry on 19 August 1861 in Wake.

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and was a prisoner at Point Lookout, MD until paroled on 13 February 1865. He was exchanged in Richmond on 17 February with no later military record.
