Age 28, from Wake County, he enlisted as Private, Company G, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Wake.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was sick in hospitals or on furlough after June 1864 and declared absent without leave by December 1864. He returned to duty on 13 February 1865 but was in a hospital in Richmond, VA by 1 April. He was captured on 3 April and held at Newport News, VA until he took an oath of allegiance on 30 June 1865 and was released.
