Age 18, from Johnston County, he enlisted as Private, Company C, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Wake County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was on detail to a hospital in Goldsboro, NC from November 1863 into June 1864, then to a hospital in Lynchburg, VA as a nurse in August 1864. He was wounded (place not given) in January 1865 and back in the hospital in Goldsboro. He was captured and paroled there on 1 May 1865.
