Age 20, from Johnston County, he enlisted as Private, Company C, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Wake County.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was captured at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863 but exchanged almost immediately, at City Point, VA on 10 May. He was detailed to a hospital in Lynchburg as disabled for field service on 18 November 1863.
