From Guilford County, he enlisted as Corporal, Company D, First North Carolina Infantry on 13 July 1861 in Warren County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the head in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was promoted to Sergeant on 24 September 1862 and was wounded again, in the Wilderness, VA on 5 May 1864. He was appointed First Sergeant in November 1864 but was detailed to a hospital in Danville, VA and transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps on 5 January 1865.
