A 23 year old farmer in Orange County, he enlisted as Private, Company F, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862.
On the Campaign
He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.
The rest of the War
He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863, was a prisoner at Fort Delaware, then transferred to Point Lookout, MD on 15 November. He took an oath of allegiance on 24 January 1864 and enlisted in Company A of the First US Volunteers.
