Age 30, from Northampton County, he enlisted as Private, Company F, First North Carolina Infantry on 30 January 1862 in Northampton.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in his left side and arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was detailed on hospital duty in March 1863 and detailed as a guard to the "President's House" in September 1864.
