Age 23, from Chowan County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 18 May 1861 in Chowan. He was promoted to Sergeant on 15 April 1862.

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He deserted to the enemy near Falmouth, VA on 27 March 1863 and took an oath of allegiance on 30 March.
