Before Sharpsburg

A 28 year old sailor from Currituck County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 1 June 1861 in Chowan County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was wounded again, at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863. He was captured in a hospital in Williamsport, MD on 14 July and sent to Point Lookout, MD on 2 October 1863. He took an oath of allegiance and enlisted in the First US Veteran Infantry on 16 February 1864.
