Age 33, from Guilford County, he enlisted as Private, Company A, First North Carolina Infantry on 1 June 1861 in Guilford County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in the arm in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He returned to duty in December 1862 and was wounded again, in the head at Chancellorsville, VA on 3 May 1863. He was back with his Company in September but was captured at Spotsylvania Court House, VA on 12 May 1864 and held at Point Lookout until he was transferred to Elmira, NY on 6 August. He took an oath of allegiance and was released on 16 June 1865.
