A 21 year old farmer in Johnston County, he enlisted as Private, Company C, First North Carolina Infantry on 15 July 1862 in Wake County.

On the Campaign

He was wounded in action at Sharpsburg on 17 September 1862.

The rest of the War

He was captured at Gettysburg, PA on 3 July 1863 and held at Fort Delaware until October, when he was sent to Point Lookout, MD. He took an oath of allegiance on 26 January 1864 and was released to enlist in Company D, First US Volunteer Infantry.
